World Tuberculosis Day is being celebrated today and on this particular occasion, doctors from all walks of lives are suggesting individuals to quit smoking regular cigarettes completely. It has been proven medically that an increase in smoke can lead people to become more susceptible to TB, which in turn can easily heighten the already existing problem in an individual who may be prone to catching this disease, probably owing to his weak immune system. Doctors have stated that individuals who are habitual of smoking more than six regular cigarettes daily are 20% more susceptible to catching TB as compared to those who do not smoke cigarettes at all.

As per the head of Community Medicine, Dr. Sanjay Dixit, TB of the lungs is fairly common and it is more prevalent in those individuals who smoke cigarettes rather than those individuals who are not habitual of smoking cigarettes at all. One of the main reasons why people who smoke cigarettes contract TB is simply because the highly offensive second hand smoke, which emits from regular cigarettes, tends to damage the lungs completely. This is why, the chances of smokers contracting this infection is quite high. The doctor went on to add that it is in the best interest of smokers to quit smoking cigarettes completely so that they can lead a healthy life.

While smoking is one of the main reasons behind TB, even HIV infection is considered as a major contributor to this disease. Owing to the HIV infection, the overall immune system of the human body weakens, because of which, the concerned individual is prone to contracting TB. While a weak immune system is considered as one of the most important causes behind an individual contracting TB, the fact remains that people also contract TB simply because they are not following a healthy routine. A healthy routine implies people eating on time and consuming healthy meals and avoiding junk food to a great extent. TB infections are also known to reduce the body’s immunity levels to a great extent.

It has also been clinically proven that children who are not maintaining healthy lifestyles have a tendency of developing cervical gland TB. This can prove fatal for children as they are young and their immune systems are not developed to handle the stress, which a diseased body needs to undergo in order to avail a complete recovery. Without a shadow of a doubt, the fact remains that a child who is habitual of consuming healthy meals and lead an active lifestyle, has the ability to withstand most diseases as he has a stronger immune system. This is one of the main reasons why children should be encouraged to follow healthy lifestyles and consume a healthy diet, which in composed of fruits, fresh vegetables, cereals as well as lean meat and fish.

According to the latest reports, it has been confirmed that more and more chain smokers are now quitting regular cigarettes and have started to puff on an electronic cigarette instead. Smokers are choosing e cigarettes simply because these devices are tobacco-free and hence, easy on the lungs.
